I have been teaching and doing research in Anthropology at Vidyasagar University, West Bengal,India since 1986. I was an Indian Council of Social Science Research(ICSSR) doctoral fellow under the supervision of Professor Surajit Sinha at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata during 1984-1985.

I did my PhD on land acquisition on which I have published my book(Land, Law and the Left: The Saga of Disempowerment of the Peasantry in the Era of Globalisation, 2007,Concept Publishing Company, New Delhi) and a number of articles in peer reviewed journals, viz.Journal of the Indian Anthropological Society, Journal of Human Ecology, Population and Development Review, Current Anthropology, Economic and Political Weekly, , European Journal of Development Research, Sociological Bulletin, Anthropological Forum and South Asian Anthropologist. 

I have acted as peer- reviewer in Current Anthropology(Chicago), Development and Change(The Hague), Anthropology(New York), Journal of the Indian Anthropological Society(Kolkata) and Anthropological Forum(Australia).

I taught courses on 'Law and Anthropology' at the National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata and was invited as UGC Visiting Fellow at the Department of Sociology, Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University and Centre for Advanced Study in Anthropology ay Utkal University.

I have presented invited papers in seminars and conferences organized by various universities, research institutes and academic organizations of India and abroad. Visited UK, Australia, Egypt, Thailand and Malaysia.

I was invited as an expert to give my suggestions on the amendment of the Land Acquisition Act by the Standing Committee on Rural Development of the Indian Parliament.

I write articles in newspapers and magazines on public issues related to the adverse impacts of land acquisition at a micro-level. I also write these articles in Bengali language.

My research interests however are not limited to land acquisition.I am interested in research methodology, common property resource management,political symbolism, kinship, anthropological theory, biography of anthropologists, human sexuality, biological and social evolution and anthropology of the university campuses.

I did my M.Phil. in Environmental Science at Calcutta University in 1984. I have taken my M.Sc. and B.Sc.(Hons.) degrees in Anthropology from the University of Calcutta..
